Canning Black Powder
The Canning Black Powder discipline captures the nostalgia and tradition of early firearms, giving shooters the opportunity to experience handgun shooting as it was practiced in a bygone era.
Competitors use muzzle-loading pistols or percussion handguns, provided they meet all safety requirements.

All firearms must be safe and compliant with club regulations.
Courses of Fire
Canning Black Powder consists of two distinct courses of fire, each designed to test different shooting skills.
25 Metre Precision Fire
- Distance: 25 metres
- Format:
- 4 serials
- Each serial is 12 minutes
- 5 rounds per serial
- Total rounds: 20
- Target: 50 metre pistol target
This stage emphasises careful loading, consistency, and precision shooting.
25 Metre Rapid Fire
- Distance: 25 metres
- Format:
- 4 serials of 5 rounds
- Target: Turning target (Mandar style)
- Faces shooter for 3 seconds
- Turns away for 2 seconds
This stage tests the shooter’s ability to manage timing and accuracy under pressure, which is particularly challenging with black powder firearms.
Additional Notes: Misfires are permitted in this discipline, recognising the historical nature and mechanical characteristics of black powder firearms.
