Canning Field Rifle

Canning Field Rifle

Canning Field Rifle is one of the rifle disciplines offered at Canning Club and is designed to develop practical field shooting skills using rimfire rifles.

This discipline focuses on the most commonly used field shooting positions, providing a well-rounded test of a shooter’s accuracy, stability, and adaptability across different scenarios.

Firearms

Competitors use rimfire rifles chambered in .22 Long Rifle (.22LR).

Requirements:

  • Maximum weight: 4 kg
(including bolt, empty magazine, sights, and accessories — excluding sling)
  • Action types permitted:
      • Bolt-action (most common)
      • Lever-action
      • Slide-action

Rifles must be safe and compliant with club regulations.

Shooting Positions

The discipline is based around four key field shooting positions:

  • Rapid Fire (standing unsupported)
  • Standing (slow fire)
  • Standing Post Rest
  • Sitting or Kneeling Post Rest

These positions simulate real-world shooting conditions, helping shooters build practical marksmanship skills.

Course of Fire

The course of fire consists of multiple stages at varying distances:

Rapid Fire

  • Distance: 25 metres
  • Rounds: 12
  • Format:
    • 4 series of 3 shots
    • 15 seconds per series

Position: Standing, unsupported

This stage tests speed, control, and quick target acquisition.

Standing (Slow Fire)

  • Distance: 25 metres
  • Rounds: 10
  • Position: Standing, unsupported

Focuses on precision and stability without support.

Standing Post Rest

  • Distance: 50 metres
  • Rounds: 10
  • Position: Standing with post support

Allows shooters to use a rest while maintaining a standing posture, improving longer-range accuracy.

Sitting / Kneeling Post Rest

  • Distance: 50 metres
  • Rounds: 10
  • Position: Sitting or kneeling with post support

Provides a more stable position for consistent precision at distance.

Skills Developed

Canning Field Rifle helps shooters improve:

  • Practical field shooting techniques
  • Position transitions and adaptability
  • Accuracy at varying distances
  • Speed and control under time constraints

In summary: Canning Field Rifle is a practical rimfire discipline that builds real-world shooting skills through a mix of rapid fire and precision shooting across multiple field positions.
