Canning Steel Challenge

Steel Challenge

Steel Challenge is a fast-paced shooting discipline where competitors aim to hit steel targets in the shortest possible time. It is widely regarded as one of the most accessible entry points into competitive shooting, thanks to its simple rules and the instant feedback of hitting steel.

The sport is governed by the Steel Challenge Shooting Association (SCSA).

Core Gameplay

Targets

Each stage consists of:

  • Five steel plates (round or rectangular)
  • One designated “stop plate”

The stop plate must be hit last, as it stops the timer for that run.

Format

  • Each stage is shot in five runs (strings)
  • The slowest run is discarded
  • The best four times are added together for the final stage score

Movement

  • 7 out of 8 stages are shot from a stationary position
  • Only one stage (Outer Limits) requires movement between shooting boxes

The Eight Official Stages

Smoke & Hope

Largest targets, usually the fastest stage

Five to Go

Four small targets in a row, finishing on stop plate

Showdown

Shot from two boxes (choice for final run)

Outer Limits

Only stage requiring movement

Accelerator

Targets vary in size and distance

Pendulum

One of the most challenging due to distance

Roundabout

Balanced stage with varied distances

Speed Option

Furthest stop plate

Equipment and Divisions

Steel Challenge is highly inclusive and supports a wide range of firearms:

Rimfire (.22 LR)

  • Pistols and rifles
  • Start from a low ready position
  • No holster required

Centre-fire Handguns

  • Divided into:
    • Iron Sight
    • Open (optics)
  • Shooters typically draw from a holster

Scoring and Penalties

  • Total Time Scoring:
Final score is the sum of stage times
    → Lowest total time wins
  • Misses:
    • Any un-hit target after hitting the stop plate = +3 seconds
  • Maximum Time:
    • 30 seconds per run

Why Shooters Enjoy Steel Challenge

Steel Challenge is popular because it:

  • Is easy to learn but difficult to master
  • Provides instant feedback (“ping” of steel)
  • Focuses purely on speed and accuracy
  • Allows shooters to track progress over time
  • Is suitable for all skill levels

In summary: Steel Challenge is a high-speed, target-focused shooting discipline that emphasises quick target acquisition and precision under time pressure, making it one of the most engaging and beginner-friendly shooting sports.
